Government & Administration
How Ebonyi State is governed, from the Government House in Abakaliki to the 13 local councils.
Like every Nigerian state, Ebonyi operates under a democratic structure with three arms of government working within the framework of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Executive
Led by the Governor and Deputy Governor, supported by commissioners and the state civil service, based at the Government House, Abakaliki.
Legislature
The Ebonyi State House of Assembly makes laws for the state and represents constituencies across the three senatorial zones.
Judiciary
The State High Court and subordinate courts interpret the law and administer justice independently.
Senatorial zones
The state is organised into three senatorial districts, which group its 13 Local Government Areas for political representation:
- Ebonyi North — including Abakaliki, Ebonyi, Izzi, Ohaukwu and Ishielu areas.
- Ebonyi Central — including Ezza North, Ezza South and Ikwo areas.
- Ebonyi South — including Afikpo North, Afikpo South (Edda), Ohaozara, Onicha and Ivo areas.
Local administration
Day-to-day grassroots governance is handled by 13 Local Government Areas, each headed by a council chairman and elected councillors delivering services at community level.
