Getting to Ebonyi

How to reach Abakaliki and travel around the state.

By air

The nearest major gateway is Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, roughly an hour and a half by road from Abakaliki. From the airport, travellers continue to Ebonyi by car, taxi or inter-city bus along the Enugu–Abakaliki expressway.

By road

Ebonyi is well connected by road to neighbouring states — Enugu to the west, Benue to the north, Cross River to the east and Abia to the south. Inter-city coaches and shared taxis link Abakaliki with Enugu, Onitsha, Aba, Umuahia, Calabar and beyond. The main motor parks in Abakaliki serve most long-distance routes.

Getting around

  • Taxis & ride-hailing — convenient for town trips and airport transfers.
  • Tricycles (keke) — the everyday way to move around Abakaliki and other towns.
  • Car hire — recommended for exploring attractions spread across the LGAs.
  • Inter-city buses — economical for travel between major towns.

Tip: Many attractions are outside the city centre, so arranging a car or trusted driver for the day makes exploring far easier.
